Zoloft

Zoloft, manufactured by Pfizer Inc., is an antidepressant prescribed for the treatment of depression, anxiety disorders, and obsessive compulsive disorder. Zoloft is among a class of drugs known as SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors), which work by increasing the levels of serotonin in the brain. Reduced levels of seratonin is believed to be linked to depression in some individuals. Patients taking Zoloft have reported experiencing serious side effects, including increased thoughts of suicide, increased suicide attempts, mania, seizures, and gastrointestinal bleeding. Recent studies indicate that children taking antidepressants may have double the risk of suicide than children not taking depression medication. In 2004, the FDA required all antidepressants to include a black box warning to inform users of the potential link between antidepressants and child suicide.
